Updated nautical charts – Printing of charts on demand
In 2010 it will be possible to order updated nautical charts from the Norwegian Hydrographic Service. The Hydrographic Service
is conducting a prototype development project for such a service, known globally as Print on Demand.
The aim of the project is to meet user demand for updated nautical charts.
The Print on Demand service will make charts updated with the most recent Notices to Mariners, normally published every 14 days, available to users on demand. This will save the user the time-consuming and error-prone manual updating of the printed charts based on the Notices.
It is planned to have a Print on Demand service available in 2010. The service will be phased in on an area-by-area basis.
Provided it is updated with the aid of the Notices to Mariners, a chart supplied using such a service will be equivalent to the printed chart in respect of the requirements of the International Maritime Organization (IMO)/SOLAS.
The service will be offered to users through authorised Print on Demand suppliers.
The Hydrographic Service is currently updating its charts at intervals of about two years. Some charts have shorter, and others longer, intervals between printings. On purchasing a new chart, our customers are thus often faced with a major task updating these with the most recent Notices.
