Making it easier for navigators

Navigators now have the opportunity easily to transfer corrections published in the Notices to Mariners (Efs) to their nautical charts.

For example, a new subsea cable can be traced onto a transparent overlay. In this way the navigator can easily trace the cable onto the chart instead of having to plot a series of coordinates describing the same cable.

Navigators have been demanding this service for some time.
Following a survey of our users in 2008, the Hydrographic Service has received many requests for Tracings from users of Norwegian nautical charts. A new project aims to offer Tracings as a service to navigators during 2009.

Tracings will not exempt users from reading and appraising all information provided by the Notices to Mariners. Thus it will still be incumbent on the users to update their own charts with information in the Notices and make their own assessments of what must be taken into consideration. Nor will it be either relevant or appropriate to make Tracings of all information provided by the Notices.

The Tracings service will be offered to all our users who subscribe to the printed and/or digital versions of the Notices to Mariners.
